Laundry Room- Where is yours and Why?

One of my desires for our new home and all other past homes was to have my own dedicated luxury laundry room. I want it to include a folding table, hanging space for wet clothes, ironing board, a television to watch HGTV while folding and ironing.  There are some clothes that I like to wash a particular way and they require being hung.  This picture above captures only part of my vision.  Well, there is a little glitch in this desire.  Since I am traditional when it comes to laundry, I want the laundry room to be housed in the basement which would include a combo space for my granddaughter to work on her crafts/scrapbooking.

The challenge:  my husband's desire and my desire.
My husband's desire is to see the laundry room upstairs on the upper level with the bedrooms which is definitely a no brainer in terms of practically.  Everyone can be responsible for taking their clothing to the laundry room without having to travel to the basement. Well, I tend to be tradition when it comes to the laundry location which is in the basement.  My vision is to create a luxury laundry room with the cute fixings that offers functionality and practicality.

I love this eclectic look.  It warms my heart!  There is plenty of space to fold and sit to do arts and crafts and anything my heart desires.

My question is to everyone:  where did you house your laundry and why?  Some people have chosen the mud room area, some have chosen upstairs which I have heard rumbles the house when drying depending upon the type of dryer, some have chosen upstairs.  My challenge is his desire, my desire.  I discovered that the home could accommodate an alternate laundry location upstairs.  Why did I share this with my hubster.  lol lol  He now wants the laundry upstairs which would close off the two story foyer that gives you a grand entrance.  At first, he was stuck on the grand entrance. Once I share the good news with him, he is convinced that this is the best location. Well, I understand why he feels this way.  The laundry was housed in the basement and I tend to wash clothes on a regular basis because I hate seeing the pile of dirty clothes in the basket.  Well, my challenge was getting the clothes back upstairs. lol He said, Nadase, the clothes go down, but they never come up.  Oops...it's so true.  I on the other hand still want my laundry in the basement, because I want the larger space.  What are some of the pros and cons you have found with your laundry location (size, location, missing clothing etc).

  1. We built a Florence and our laundry is on the first floor. I had it in the basement of previous 2 story homes and hated it! Like you, the laundry got down there, but seldom come back up! lol That was when the kids were small and I was ALWAYS doing laundry! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it on the first floor. I have to say, my washer is noisy! Don't know if it's noisy, because it's not on concrete like it was in the basement. Look forward to watching your build and good luck with your decision!

    1. GS, thank you for sharing! What do you love about it being on the first floor? I heard that some folks talked to their PM to have additional joists installed during construction for the area of the washer/dryer because of the rumbling. We do have a blogger who remedy this problem after construction. I would have to find his page to share it.

  2. We didn't have a choice about where to put our laundry, but our preference was to have it upstairs anyway, so it worked out perfectly. The laundry was in the basement in our last place, and it was such a pain toting it up and down stairs! Plus, our basement steps were very narrow, so you couldn't even carry the basket the normal way. I don't know if we've just been very lucky, but we haven't noticed any noise or vibration AT ALL!

    1. I am concerned about the noise disruption. In the basement its out of sight out of mind. I also thought about water accidents. I like the idea of not having to carry the clothing..a pain in the butt. .just hesitant ugggh..and we need to confirm soon. Glad you are happy with your location and no noise zone. I think we need to go wit extra joists if the PM allows it if we make this choice. Thanks for responding LNT!

  3. I was just about to say that I remember some of the other bloggers mention having additional joists added during construction. I remember discussing it, but I'm not sure if I actually did it. My entire house doesn't shake, BUT the laundry is right over the foyer in my home and it rattles the light fixture but not enough to bother anyone. My decision of going with laundry upstairs is because I don't want to have to go downstairs to get clothes when I forget to bring them up. BUT at the same time, if I had a retreat like you are planning down there where I can do things down there while I am washing clothes at the same time... Sounds like a bonus to me! And get rid of the two story foyer???? NEGATIVE! Just my opinion, but I'm team Nadase! lol

    1. There she is!! Hi Joiful!! I am happy to see you hear. Your decor was coming along so nicely, you must continue to share with us. How are you enjoying your new home? What is your blog address? Thank you so much for the feed back. It made me smile. I have to admit the two story is beautiful and closing it reserves heat cost. Ugggh We will still have the two story family room. But we are still on tne fence because it changes the exterior window and we are waiting for a picture.

  4. Our laundry room is on the first floor in our mudroom, which is a bit of a tight squeeze, but I'm glad it's not in the basement because I'm dangerous enough carrying a full laundry basket up and down one flight of stairs. I'm constantly touching up the paint along the walls for the stairs because I bump the cloth laundry basket against the flat builder paint and it leaves marks. Also, with the laundry room on the first floor I'm more likely to remember that the clothes need to be transferred from the washer to the dryer, etc. at the end of the cycle than if the washer and dryer were in the basement where we rarely go since our basement is mainly used for storage.

I lived in a rental house quite a while ago that had the laundry room on the second floor and I loved it! Not needing to carry clothes up and down the stairs was awesome, but I constantly worried about the washer overflowing or something and it being a big pain to clean up. Of course, I guess the same thing could happen with it in my mudroom too though.

    Good luck with your decision!

  5. We have our laundry room on the bedroom level. I think it's the most practical location for moving clothes around. I don't think going up and down the stairs will be too much fun. As far as the noise goes it hasn't been a problem but I can sometimes hear it if there something inside causing a clanking sound. You can also try requesting additional insulation if the laundry shares a wall with any bedrooms. I'm also not a fan of laundry in the mud rooms either, because people are coming and going through that space. Something about it feels unsanitary.

    1. You are right Owen! Going up and down the stairs to do laundry was no joke. I wanted the new builder to build us a laundry chute but it would not work with the design of the home. My husband really wants it upstairs. I am just concerned about the noise and....knock on wood, water accidents. My husband wins the upstairs laundry room debacle.

  6. Nadese! So happy you are building your dream home! We too decided that it's time for us to move on. We're struggling on the "when" though. I'd like to put our home on the market this summer, hubby says next year. Our house just feels so small now that we have filled it, coming home literally gives me anxiety. First world problems, I know. But I can't help but feel that way. Your new home is going to be beautiful. I cannot wait to watch you build! I personally am looking at the RH Verona. I love the 9 ft ceilings in the foyer and the laundry directly up top. Our current laundry situation is, it piles in front of the washer in the upstairs hallway closing off the two front bedrooms. THIS IS THE CAUSE OF MY ANXIETY. haha. Easy to resolve problem, but it keeps happening. I need a room for it. Can't wait to watch this new adventure for you unfold!

    1. Hi Cindy, I just saw the RH Verona in the community where we are building our new home. I saw it built a lot during our Rome build and it was a pleasure to see it in person. It was nicely decorated and very cozy. I really like the layout of the home especially with the bonus room. It took us several months to sell so you may want to consider that when you decide to sell your home. We were in direct competition with RH since they were still building in the community and people preferred new build. We started in March and sold in August. It is interesting what happens when you get into a home and than later realize it's too small. The Rome is a nice size house but there were several things that caused me great anxiety too. I wish you much success. You may want to start doing the research with an agent just to see what you can sell your home for along with comps in the area. It may sway your decision to buy now instead of later. Not to mention that it is now a buyers market. When were built it was a sellers market which is why we decided we needed to purchase now, rather than later to avoid paying more for a home.

  7. Our laundry is on the 2nd floor in our current Sienna and I swear I will never go back! We're building a Palermo, again a 2nd floor laundry. With 3 little kids, I can't imagine having to walk the steps with all of the laundry I do :) Now, it's by no means a "luxury" laundry and is actually quite small. But it's close enough everyone can take their clothes to the laundry room and sort them, that's good enough for me!
